The Antonio Meucci Lodge is committed to supporting students of the Italian language, especially senior high school students pursuing college.  The Lodge has an annual scholarship program and also works with the NYS Grand Lodge Foundation to enable members to be eligible for the Foundation's scholarships.

Annual Competition

Each year, the Lodge offers several academic merit-based scholarships to awardees that best meet the below requirements:

General Eligibility: Applicant must be a graduating high-school senior of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) who has studied the Italian language (or another language if Italian is not offered at the school) for a minimum of three years and who has been accepted to a college or university on a part-time or full-time basis.   Proof of acceptance at the college/university must be shown.

Academic Requirements: Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 90% and a 90% GPA in the Italian (or other) language.

Application Form: All applicants must complete the application form (see below) and forward it with the required documents specified on the form to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson.

Letters of Recomendation: One letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor and two letters of recommendation from teachers are required as part of the application.   Letters should be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson.

Transcript: The Applicant should request that their high school send an official transcript to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson.

Deadline: All required items are due to the Scholarship Committe Chairperson by May 1.

Process: The Scholarship Committee will screen all applications and accompanying materials and choose several candidates to be interviewed.   Awardees will then be chosen and only these scholarship recipients will be notified.   Monetary awards are sent directly to the recipient's academic institutions.

All scholarship winners will be invited to attend a special ceremony at the Lodge in May that family and friends may attend.

Children and grandchildren of Lodge Members should complete the Member Application Form.

Grand Lodge Scholarships

In conjunction with the NYS Grand Lodge Foundation, our Lodge also awards the B. Albert Roselli Scholarship, and the Scholarship in Memory of Deceased Members. These two scholarships are awarded annually to children or grandchildren of active members of the Antonio Meucci Lodge # 213; please see the Foundation's website for eligibility and other requirements.

In July 1871, Meucci was nearly killed in a ferryboat explosion, leaving him hospitalized for months.  His wife Ester had little choice but to sell his original phone models to a junk dealer to raise money for his medical expenses.
